Now neighbourhood post office on your PC

In yet another step towards modernising India's postal services, Union Communications and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday launched ‘e-post office', the e-commerce portal of India Post that will provide various postal services online.

What is ePost?
The advent of Internet has changed the way in which we communicate. It has also divided the globe in to two. While those who are within the World Wide Web can avail the advantage of electronic communication, those who are outside it are left with only the 'snail mail'. Thus the globe is once again made of two groups namely the eHaves and eHave-nots. This Digital Divide keeps the Netters from communicating with those who are outside the Net.

Innovation
India Post is launching its major innovation ePost to bridge this divide. By ePost it is proposed to link those who are inside the Net with those outside IT. By this electronic communication can be sent to those who are not having connectivity. Each individual is given an epost id based on his geographical address. Mails would be received at this epost id through electronic mode. At these identified ePost Centres the mails would be downloaded, printed and sent out for delivery to the addressee. Thus the customer would be able to get his mail from anywhere in the Globe in a matter of hours.
A Beginning
This experiment is being launched on a pilot basis in five States of India. Individuals and Businesses in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat can receive ePost through this process. Based on the experience this would be extended to the rest of the Country in due course. You can check the availability of ePost service to a particular destination from our website www.indiapost.org or http://indianpostoffice.net/
Concept
Every Delivery Post office in these five states is given an email id. This id is based on the PIN code of that post office. Thus
Mumbai GPO, 400001 is epost400001@indianpostoffice.net,
Colaba PO 400005 is epost400005@indianpostoffice.net,
Panaji HO 403001 is epost403001@indianpostoffice.net
Trivandrum GPO 695001 is epost695001@indianpostoffice.net
Hyderabad GPO 500001 is epost500001@indianpostoffice.net
Ahmedabad GPO 380001 is epost380001@indianpostoffice.net
No Barrier
The customer from anywhere in the Globe sitting at home can send mail to his clients, relations, and friends. The ePost would be delivered in hours. To begin with those who are in the delivery jurisdiction of these five States would be able to receive ePost.
Tariff
Tariff for ePost is @ Rs. 10 per page of A4 size.
