The Chennai Police have unearthed a racket stealing data from credit cards and using it for booking tickets on domestic flights.
The suspects engaged salespersons in major malls, who stole the data from the credit cards of customers.
Tickets worth Rs. 15 lakh
Following a complaint from Mohammed Sajid that money was debited from his credit card account for a flight ticket that he never booked, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Crime Branch) C. Sridhar formed a special team, which found that flight tickets worth Rs.15 lakh were booked in the recent past with the help of stolen credit card data.
“We have arrested two graduates, Munawar, Mujahideen, and their associate Afzal. The modus operandi of Munawar was to engage salespersons in malls and obtain the credit card number, card verification value (CVV) number and the date of expiry that was required to book a flight ticket online,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (CCB) M. Sudhakar said.
Private bank
The suspects focussed on credit cards issued by a particular private bank.
“In some cases, they even managed to enter the password correctly. We are on the lookout for a few others involved in the case. Their arrest will give more leads in the case. Munawar used to pay Rs. 500 for each credit card data,” Dr. Sudhakar said.
Investigators swooped down on a house on the outskirts of Bangalore from where Munawar and Mujahideen were operating and arrested them.
Two laptops, Internet data cards, 37 SIM cards and 41 bogus credit cards were seized from the house.
“They had contacts with some travel agents and managed to sell the flight tickets through them,” he said.
