Dairy institute clones buffalo successfully

In a significant boost to country’s research on developing superior milch buffaloes for augmenting milk production, Karnal-based the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) on Monday announced birth of another cloned buffalo calf, through the new and advanced ‘hand-guided cloning technique’.
AK Srivastava, director, NDRI said the cloning technology could go a long way in helping for faster multiplication of superior milch buffaloes in country.

The bovine was cloned using an advanced hand-guided technique, Dr A K Srivastava, Director, NDRI, Karnal, was quoted as saying.

"The latest cloned buffalo calf is different from the earlier calf because in this case the donor cell used was an embryonic stem cell. In the earlier cloning, the donor cell was from somatic cells," he said, adding the new born weighed about 32 kilos, local media reported.

The NDRI had produced the world's first cloned buffalo calf on February 6, 2009.
