Why does 15th August boil down to discounts and sales and weekend getaways? Are we taking our Independence for granted?

Why does 15th August boil down to discounts and sales and weekend getaways? Are we taking our Independence for granted?
At the stroke of midnight when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom on August 15. The freedom that was granted to us by martyrs who didn’t care about their lives to let us see the light of independence. Cut to reality- At the stroke of midnight you will see hordes of sales and discount offers.

Besides availing of whopping discounts, many people will be on their way to weekend getaways. Is it fair to celebrate the true spirit of Independence Day this way?

Does this indicate a dangerous trend where people are under rating the only day that symbolizes the spirit of the Indian nation? TV commentator and speaker Suhel Seth sadly states, “What is left of patriotism today of India? We don’t have inspirational role models in Indian society of the likes of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.” He goes on to add, “It’s a sociological trend where young don’t even remember 1947. We don’t build patriotic values, so I am not surprised that Independence Day is treated like another holiday or an opportunity to bag discounts. It is the time of quick fixes, the age of Internet. Amartya Sen rightly said in his new book, 'The idea of democracy is not about election any more, but about opportunity.'
